LARYNGOTRACHEAL TRAUMA MANAGEMENT AND ASSOCIATED MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY: 4-YEAR EXPERIENCE AT A TERTIARY CARE CENTER

Objective: Cut throat injuries pose a great therapeutic challenge due to the multiple vital structures that are vulnerable in small, confined unprotected area. In this study, we describe site and depth of injury, etiology, management, prognosis. Methods: This was retrospective study 18 laryngotracheal trauma patients treated at department ENT MDM hospital between April 2017 January 2020. Results: Out 176 cases penetrating neck presented with breach framework. Male: female ratio 17:1. The peak age incidence is 2nd 4th decade life. Accidental cut injury most common mode (83%), followed by homicidal (11%) then suicidal (5%). Endotracheal intubation (where possible) or emergency tracheostomy done secure airway all cases, surgical debridement laryngeal/hypopharynx repair. Post-operative endoscopy useful identify complications. Wound dehiscence complication. Conclusion: one emergency. Timely intervention paramount, because it may otherwise cause death patient. Securing airway, control hemorrhage, fluid blood replacement mainstay prevent complications such as shock, sepsis, laryngeal stenosis, fistula formation.
